208 ensemble is proud to introduce Avant-Garden, our flagship project designed to commission chamber music from emerging and underrepresented composers and cultivate an accessible, collaborative environment for the performance of contemporary art.

208 ensemble seeks to develop its role within the Boise community as the voice for progressive chamber music. In addition to the advocacy and performance of music by living composers, 208 ensemble endeavors to facilitate the generation of new chamber music inspired by themes and characteristics relevant to the city of Boise and its residents.

sow the seeds

Our annual commissioning effort will consist of the following:
  • A national call-for-composers to select an emerging and/or underrepresented composer;

  • A commission for original chamber music from the selected composer;

  • Public workshops with the selected composer;

  • Performances of the commissioned work as part of Treefort Music Fest and our annual showcase event;

  • The pursuit of interdisciplinary co-commissions with local fine arts organizations.

Our vision is to cultivate an accessible, collaborative environment for diverse audiences to experience the performance of contemporary art. This long-term pursuit will consist of the following:
  • Hosting a curated event during Treefort Music Fest, featuring collaborative performances by local and regional musicians, dancers, poets, and visual artists;

  • Hosting open rehearsals to allow audiences to develop a deeper connection to contemporary repertoire, composers, and the rehearsal process;

  • Serving as a catalyst for interdisciplinary collaboration and galvanizing support for local artists;

  • Establishing an independent, contemporary performing arts festival in Boise, Idaho.
